What is EPS (Styrofoam)?
What is EPS (styrofoam or foam) used in core (filling) of YapıPAN SIP panels? EPS means Expanded Polystyrene Foam. It is totally harmless to nature and people’s health. Today, EPS is used in packaging, fish boxes, throwaway plates and cups, outer surfaces of buildings and even in baby staff safely.
EPS is a typical white thermoplastic material that is in foam form with closed pores and produced by polymerization of styrene monomer from petroleum. Black/grey products are available upon special request to reflect wave radiation. In EPS products that is produced by inflating the polystyrene grains and binding them to each other, the gas used for inflating and forming foam is Pentane. Pentane is an organic compound which provides to form small grains and make them replace with air during and after production of foams. Pentane gas that emerges transforms into CO2 and H2O which already exist in atmosphere. By the emergence of pentane, many small closed pores trap air (dependng on the density, 3-6 billion in 1 m3 EPS) inside themselves. The material composed of immobile air in 98% and polystyrene in 2%.
The material gets through the process of pre-inflation after attained as raw material in small grains. By the time pentane gas in grains replaces with air and desired density of material is achieved. Then inflated grains are ripped in large tanks and bonding of grains is achieved by using water steam. As a result, bonding of grains forms a mass consists of polygonal shapes. Further production steps depend on usage area (insulation or packaging) of the material. As known, stable air is a perfect, economical, and nature friendly heat insulation material. High insulation performance of EPS is provided by stable air inside the foam grains. The EPS, which is one of the best heat insulation materials in the World, is the only material in our country having the same performance with lower prices.
Although insulation has been used for long years in structures, EPS has been used for only 50 years. The high insulation performance and economical properties of EPS depends on its production with the stable air inside it which is the cheapest, eco-friendly material in the World. Use of EPS in the World started with the name Styropor in 1950’s in Germany. Production of EPS increased after this date. YapıPOR brand EPS products, which are produced by our company, are B2 class fire resistant materials.
We are able to produce YapıPOR brand EPS materials with densities vary from 8kg/m3 to 45 kg/m3. However standard density value for YapıPOR EPS used in the YapıPAN SIP Panels is 16kg/m3. This value was accepted as a regular standard number in United States which is regarded as homeland of EPS and it was found enough in many calculations and applications made before. As it was mentioned before, meaning of SIP panel is “Structural Insulated Panel”. It is not always necessary to use EPS in its core. High density Rockwool, which is also generally accepted material, can be used instead of EPS. However, rockwool is not always preferred over EPS because its more expensive than EPS and its features and heat insulation coefficient is not much different than EPS. SIP panels are also tried to be produced with polyurethane filling in our country, as it is done in United States and Russia, however it is not a successful process, because polyurethane behaves differently and releases a high amount of toxic gases in case of fire. Besides, it is not preferrable, because some problems arise over time when it mixes with air.
